Watoto Momella - Education in the Momella region
Education is one of the key challenges in Tanzania. In cooperation with our partners on the spot p(e)d supports the setup of an entry-school for the children of the Momella region. With the entry-/pre-school about 50 children of the region are put into the position to participate in the educational system.
p(e)d supports the construction of an entry-school, its equipment, furnishings and the funding of a qualified teacher. Here, the children are prepared to pass the entry tests of the surrounding private-schools in Arusha, so that a continuous qualified education is within reach. A "sponsor a kid" initiative will then cover the annual costs of about 250 US$ per child.
We cooperate conceptually with the "School of St. Jude" (LINK: www.schoolofstjude.co.tz) in Arusha.
The education of the Momella farmers (bwana) will also take place in connection with the p(e)d school project. The farmers of Momella will be taught in sustainable agrarian-culture and surrounding topics in the schoolhouse.
In Tanzania, the attendance of the primary school (four grades) is free and obligatory, secondary schools charge a fee. However every primary school class has about 100 students. Teachers for primary schools in Tanzania earn about 100-150 US$ a month. They are usually not adequately qualified to prepare the students successfully for the tests to the secondary schools. The quota of the school enrolment amounts to about 80 percent, however Tanzania has one of the lowest transition quotas to the secondary school in Africa. Only approximately 6 percent of the students of an age-group attend the secondary school in Tanzania.
This means that for most of the children in Tanzania school and education finishes after the 4th grade. There is a lack of qualified teachers, insufficient equipment and above all this is due to the tuition fees for the secondary school.
Broadly speaking, there is criticism of a declining educational level, (sources: foreign ministry / Germany).
p(e)d partners can visit the projects, talk to the villagers and engage personally in the school setup.
